Pharmacy Students of UMY Win National Pharmacy Competition

Pharmacy students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) became the winner of Self-Medication Tournament (SMT) in Indonesia Clinic Pharmacy Olympiad (OFKI), a competition organized by Health Training Agency (BAPELKES) of Batam and Pharmacy of UNPAD collaborating with Ministry of Health of Republic of Indonesia. They were pharmacy students of batch 2013, namely Aiyun Astiani, Danang Wiguna, and Komarudin. Indeed, the OFKI comprised eight competitions; those were poster competition, scientific writing competition, Pharmaceutical Care and Case Report, Self Medication Tournament, Patient Counseling Event, Patient Counseling Event, Clinical Pharmacy Quiz, and Pharmachy Debate.

In an interview on Thursday (10/12), Aiyun informed that the competition was conducted on 1-6 December 2015 at Bapelkes office of Batam. The theme of the OFKI was ‘Clinical Pharmacy Development’. The OFKI encompassed national seminar and national competitions. Alhamdulillah, we became the winner of Self-Medication Tournament (SMT),” she expressed.

Furthermore, Danang informed that the SMT was a competition examining students’ knowledge and capability to give appropriate medicine based on a patient’s condition and pain. Their ability in providing counseling was also competed. ‘Self-Medication is an action to cope with health problem by consuming medicine without a doctor’s recipe. We firstly answered 100 questions, and 20 participants passed semifinal round. In the final round, the participants practiced patient management, and ultimately we won the competition. The first runner up and the second runner up were University of Andalas and UNPAD respectively.

Previously, in November, the students achieved the winner of Pharmacy Competition held by UGM. They will join the other national pharmacy competition organized by Pharmacy of UNAIR in January 2016.
