Communication Sciences of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) conducted Communication Urban Market, a business exhibition of communication science students of UMY of batch 2014 that was a final project of seven classes of students taking Entrepreneurship course. There were 42 businesses displayed in the events like service and culinary businesses. It was organized on Wednesday (6/1) at Lapangan Bintang of UMY.
In an interview on Thursday (12/1), the Entrepreneurship lecturer Erwan Sudiwijaya, S.Sos., M.A. stated that the exhibition aimed at showing the students that learning is the matter of not only mastering theories but also practicing what have been learned at class in daily life. “To implement what students learned at Entrepreneurship class, the exhibition was held. It is expected that students could practice immediately, and the Communication Urban Market, indeed, has been conducted four times since 2011,” he told.
The students undertook brainstorming what kind of business they will run. They were required to count the first capital and to list what the need to establish the business. “The students learn how to build a business, contemplate ideas, write a proposal, present the proposal, and make the dummy product,” he mentioned.
Several unique business displayed in the exhibition were old business like a tire repair, duplicate keys, and ‘othok-othok’ (ship toys). “The businesses were designed as what people need nowadays,” Erwan conveyed.
Additionally, one of the communication science students Endrax Dwi Kurniawan expressed, “I could learn the process of running a business through this event. I could understand how to count benefits as well as initial business capital, and find our marketing strategies and business plans.”
