War is not a conflict resolution among countries, but peace. This is a notion initiated by Tun Dr. Mahatir Muhammad, a Former Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Due to his perseverance in creating peace, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) will bestow Doctorate Honoris Causa (DR HC) in Global Peace. It will be his first award.

In an interview on Thursday (25/2) Prof. Dr. Bambang Cipto stated that Tun Mahatir deserves to obtain DR HC. One of the peace activities undertaken by Tun Mahatir is organizing Mahatir Global Peace School (MGPS). “UMY has been cooperating with Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPF) to conduct the MGPS four times. The event shows that Tun Mahatir truly perseveres in coining world peace,” he conveyed.

The honorary degree is a contribution of UMY to the world. “Tun Mahatir always declares peace through peace forums. May he always promote world peace by having the honorary degree, and UMY as well as PGPF can contribute to bring world peace into reality,” he expected.

Prof. Bambang had a meeting with Tun Mahatir 19 February 2016, and he informed that Tun Mahatir appreciated UMY and it is an honor for him to achieve DR HC.

Dr. Indira Prabasari, Head of Cooperation Bureau of UMY as well as the event coordinator of the awarding, said that Tun Mahartir welcomed UMY parties and felt distinguished to gain DR HC.

“The meeting was attended by Rector of UMY, Vice Chancellor III of UMY, Secretary of UMY, representatives of PGPF, and Secretariat team of Mahatir Muhammad. The honorary degree will be bestowed on Thursday, 17 March 2016 at Sportorium of UMY,” Indira stated.

Tun Mahatir also will deliver a remark on the awarding, and UMY will invite Governor of Yogyakarta Special Region, Chairperson of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Ambassador of Palestine to Indonesia, and Muhammadiyah figures. Additionally, there will also be conducted Exhibition Criminalized War.
