Three students of Law Faculty of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) of batch 2013, namely Sarah Fadhilah, Dika Puspitasari, and Tareq Muhammad Aiz Elven, became the winner of law debate competition across Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY). The competition was conducted by Student Executive Board of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) on Saturday (19/11). The debate theme was ‘Equitable Law Reform as a Development Milestone’.

Acting as an opposition team, UMY defeated UMS in the final round with the motion ‘This House Would Implement Jurisprudence in Indonesian Justice’. “We explained that justice system in Indonesia employs court system, but judge is the one decided a case. Source of law of Indonesia is constitution,” he stated.

In an interview on Tuesday (22/11), Tareq told that jurisprudence is applied as common law such Malaysia. “In Malaysia, the source of law is based on a jury’s decision and the country does not possess a written law. As an opposition, we have to firmly disagree with the motion. For one reason, law system in Indonesia demand judges to decide a case,” he asserted.

Tareq, achieving the best speaker, said that his team and he took long time to study a lot of references. “We also learned many related motions. We tried our best. Indeed, we were sleep deprived,” he expressed.

“Alhamdulillah, I could be the best speaker, and my team became the winner. That was our stepping stone to join other competitions. Insya Allah, we are going to join an annual competition organized by constitutional court in March and April. I hope we can be the winner,” he expected.
