Students of UMY Coins an Automatic Decubitus Bed

Issues of a decubitus ulcer reach 33.3 percent, while other ASEAN countries were only 2.1 to 3.3 percent. The decubitus ulcer commonly occurs because there is pressure or friction between skin and a bed for long time, and the skin eventually will look red. The decubitus ulcer affects people who have medical treatment such as stroke, fracture, or generative sufferers.

To overcome the issues, Indonesian nurses put the patients on an anti-decubitus bed manually every two or four hours at evening. Noticing the fact, students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) associated in a team of Student Creativity Week of Copyright Works (PKM-KC) coined SBARED (Smart Arm Bed for Decubitus). The team comprised four students, namely Muhammad Hfzhan Gading A. (an Electrical Engineering student of batch 2014), Indah Septianing Tias (a Nursing student of batch 2015), Ari Wahyudi Putra (a Nursing student of batch 2015), and Soiyagin Athari (a Nursing student of batch 2016). The team was supervised by Rama Okta Wiyagi, S.T., M.Eng.

“The SBARED functions as an automatic anti-decubitus bed that can change a patient’s position (right-left side) automatically and produce movement in certain time,” told Irpan, the team leader as well as a student of Electrical Engineering of batch 2014, in an interview on Friday (14/7).

The SBARED utilizes a microcontroler with arm (actuator) as the activator to give pressure, to move the bed, and change the position of the patient. “We are now attempting to develop the technology so that it can be applied for beds at hospital and for home care bed,” maintained Irpan.

He expected that the SBARED could become an innovative health bed which can significantly decrease the number of decubitus sufferers in Indonesia. I also wish that patients feel comfortable when having medical treatment,” wished Irpan.
