PAI of UMY Firstly Conducts an International Student Teaching Internship

Students of Department of Islamic Studies of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) firstly had an international student teaching internship at Sekolah Indonesia Luar Negeri in areas of the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Malaysia. The internship was an attempt to enhance competences of graduates of the department.

“The international internship is follow-up cooperation between UMY Department of Islamic Studies of UMY and Education and Cultural Attaché of KBRI in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March 2017. Eight female students and five male students of batch 2014 are going to have the internship for two months. I wish that they could observe an educational system implemented in elementary to high schools in Malaysia,” told Naufal Ahmad Rijalul Alam, S.Ag., M.A., M.Ed. as the internship supervisor in a pre-departure of the internship on Monday (24/7) at lobby of Rector of UMY.

The students were Rofiudin Habiburohman, Muhammad Sururi, Khoirul Umam, Nashrullah Fatahillah, Dea Al Kamal Khash, Neneng Kurnia Rahma Putri, Armina Dewi Sagita, Laela Farhatun Zakiyah, Alfi Cahya Daulati, Lisana Aliyya Humaida, Rizqa Sholehatin, Endah Tri Sejatiningrum, and Nur Halimah. Naufal informed that eight students will have a teaching practice at Sekolah Indoensia Kuala Lumpur, while the other five students will perform the practice at Rintisan Sekolah Indonesia Johor Baru (SIJB) from 25 July to 28 September 2017.

Naufal explained that the students should meet requirements such as language ability and grades including grades of teaching practice and Islamic study course to join the international internship. “There were 43 students registering for the program, but only 13 students passed the selection process. Besides their score, we also considered their language capability since they will teach not only Indonesian but also international students. This is the first international internship organized by this department so that we expect to have a teaching internship in other South East Asian countries,” he hoped.

Meanwhile, Vice of Rector for Academic Affairs advised the thirteen students to be professional in teaching and to bring a good name of UMY. “There are several parameters to be a successful person at work. First, we have to notice their intention. Second, we have to dare to show our capability. Next, if we are successful, we have to remain tawadhu’ (humble, ed.), and if we are failed, we have to reflect ourselves. Last but not least, we have to be sincere and keep a name of UMY as an Islamic university so that we will always do Islamic activities and we do not forget activities at mosque. People often forget these activities when they go abroad.
