A student of Department of Economics of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) Siham Madihah presented her research entitled ‘Empowering Livelihood of Disabled People through Batik Village’ in Asian Academic Society International Conference (AASIC) 2017 in Khon Khaen University International College, Thailand, conducted on 26-27 July 2017. This is one of the goals of UMY to be a world-class university so that Faculty of Economics and Business will always attempt to send the students to participate in various international events.
In the conference organized by Indonesian Student Association (PPI), Siham talked about the empowerment of the disabled people in Rejodani, Sleman, Yogyakarta. “The empowerment was undertaken through a number of approaches. For instance, the disabled are motivated to be more confident, provided with sustainable counselling, and encouraged to find their potential. The empowerment focuses on how to make batik starting from the tools, patterns, painting, coloring, and drying. They are also developing their potential such as sewing,” told Siham in an interview on Monday (31/7).
She emphasized that the disabled should understand what they draw on batik fabric so that they can comprehend philosophy of various batik patterns. “To appreciate them, I wore batik which they made during the AASIC. To develop them needs support of a number of parties such as higher education institutions and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Therefore, public will not deprecate the disabled and give the disabled the same rights,” stated Siham, whose research was supervised by Diah Setyawati Dewanti, S.E., M.Sc.
Sham expected that her presentation would enhance people’s concern about the disabled. “I wish that the research findings could sustainably be implemented. Hence, works of the disabled can assist economic growth and community development,” she envisaged.
Besides, two other students of International Program of Islamic Economics & Finance (IPIEF) of UMY of batch 2012 also presented their research entitled ‘Analysis of Exchange Rate Fluctuation Using Vector Error Correction Model (Vecm) from 20110 to 2015’. They were Puguh Prasetya Mulya and Fitra Prasapa Widya.
