MDMC Hosts Scientific Meeting and Nationwide Work Meeting as an Effort to Reduce the Risks of Disasters

In anticipation of the Muhammadiyah 2020 Congress, the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Agency or internationally known as the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC), held a Muhammadiyah Scientific Meeting (PIM) for Disaster and National Work Meeting (RAKERNAS) to discuss a disaster risk reduction movement, on January 30 to 2 February 2020 at Universitas Muhammdiyah Yogyakarta. There are two major themes that were carried by MDMC at this meeting and the National Working Meeting titled ‘Strengthening Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Resources and Disaster Technology in the framework of Advancing Indonesia, the Disaster Risk Reduction Movement, and Advancing Indonesia Enlightening the Universe’.

The Chairperson of MDMC, Budi Setiawan explained in the Press Conference at UMY on Wednesday (29/1) that this activity would be attended by 500 academic practitioners, including MDMC members throughout Indonesia, Muhammadiyah Hospitals, and Muhammadiyah Universities. Some important figures in the field of disaster are also invited to attend this Disaster PIM event including Former Head of BNPB Prof. Syamsul Ma’arif, MSi, UGM Disaster Specialist Prof. Teuku Faisal Fathoni, and UMY Disaster Specialist as well as MDMC vice-chairperson Dr. Rahmawati Husein. Other figures who will attend the MDMC Rakernas include BNPB System and Strategy Deputy Ir. Wisnu Wijaya, MSi, Director of Human Rights and Humanity of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Prof. Muhadjir Effendy, and Indonesian Ambassador to Lebanon Hajriyanto Y Tohari.

The theme of Strengthening Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Resources and Disaster Technology in the context of Promoting Indonesia will be discussed at the Disaster PIM event. The Committee Chair in this MDMC activity, Budi Santoso, agrees that technology is important in the world of disaster. “The influence and development of technology today is very massive, which in this era is referred to as Industry 4.0. Disaster relief efforts also require sophisticated technology in the process of its implementation, which makes it an important concentration in the topic of discussion in PIM Disaster activities by MDMC, in addition to the role of communities who need independence in their readiness to cope with disasters,” he said.

Meanwhile, the National Work Meeting will be held from Friday (31/1) to Sunday (2/2), to discuss national programs to formulate what programs will be carried out at the Muhammadiyah 2020 Congress. There will be a briefing on the status of MDMC in the past five years and five years to come, regarding their participation in local and international disasters. The internationalization of Muhammadiyah requires MDMC to play a role in the international stage, and that has been done by sending volunteers to the Philippines, Myanmar, and Bangladesh as explained by Dr. Rahmawati Husein.

The discussion agenda for the achievement and awareness of disaster programs will be discussed in the MDMC National Work Meeting. According to Dr. Rahmawati Husein, MDMC is not only a response agency, but an overall disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and post-disaster recovery agency. “Over the past five years, the MDMC has carried out the construction of Disaster Relief Hospitals in nine provinces in Indonesia, and the hospitals are resistant to disasters and if affected by disasters can function properly. For example, in Bima NTB when there was a flash flood, Muhammadiyah Hospital could operate on the fourth day, “said Rahmawati. (Hbb)
