Haedar Nashir: Don’t Be Careless When Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed the social fabric in society. Various updates continue to be held so that the outbreak does not create new problems. But the response taken by policy holders must go through thorough planning. The community must also be able to behave and act appropriately so that conditions can improve.

Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Central Board Prof. Dr. H. Haedar Nasir, M.Sc. implored the public to not take rash actions in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also explained that a superpower as large as the United States of America could be overwhelmed in making sure its citizens obey the rules that had been formed. According to him, the Indonesian government must make the rights decisions to not make the situation more chaotic and confusing for the people. Religious leaders are also required to do religious assistance and provide a proper understanding.

“A country as advanced as the United States has the highest number in the Corona Virus case. So, the Indonesian government must be right in making decisions. Then, there needs to be religious assistance that can provide religious views in the current situation,” he said while filling the Ramadan Study of 1441 H for Leaders, Lecturers and Employees of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) using an online application, Tuesday (12/5).

The lecturer of the UMY Government Studies Program also reminded us that we must not be arrogant. We must strengthen relations between people. Events such as the rejection of the bodies of health workers who died in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. and the wave of protests when new Indonesian citizens arrived from China can be very damaging to the spirit of humanity.

“We must take care of each other during the COVID-19 pandemic. Humanity must be nurtured so that we can get through this together,” he added.

However, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, he saw a positive movement by a number of people on a massive scale. Haedar said that it was in line with the spirit of Al-Maun that had been initiated by K.H Ahmad Dahlan to help others. Then he also said that at this time selfish actions are useless, because they would only harm oneself and others.

“Muhammadiyah and UMY should help the people, this is in line with the spirit of Al-Maun conducted by the founder of Muhammadiyah, K.H. Ahmad Dahlan,” he added.

At the end of the lecture, Hadar advised academics to continue to contribute to society. The campuses must continue to provide ideas and solutions for the community to be able to bypass this pandemic. (Ak)
