An Online and Distance Learning System Is UMY’s Effort to Be a World-Class University

The technology development, particularly the existence of internet, eases people’s daily activities. It possesses essential roles in their life.

Indeed, education and technology are inextricable. Engaging technology in education can yield sophisticated collaboration. For instance a learning system shifts from face to face to blended learning as well as Online and Distance Learning (ODL).

Noticing the fact, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) conducted a public lecture on ODL for UMY’s lecturers on Saturday (7/4) at the main hall of A.R. Fachruddin A. The speaker of the public lecture was Secretary Director of Research Office of Directorate General of Higher Education.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UMY Dr. Sukamta, S.T., M.T. stated that the ODL denotes a learning system without having a face-to-face meeting. “This is an effort of UMY to confront a modern era and to keep updating with the technology development,” he stated in the opening prior to the public lecture.

Sukamta explained that the public lecture discusses the online and distance learning and lecturers’ preparation for the new learning system. “The public lecture aims to provide understanding of the online and distance learning system. It is expected that, later, the timeline of e-learning of UMY is accessible for students around the world. Hence, UMY’s lecturers will have students from various countries and UMY can become a world-class university,” he hoped.
