Communication Awards 2018 Preserves Local Languages through Works

At the soft opening of Communication Awards 2018 on Thursday (1/11) at A.R. Fachruddin B of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Head of Department of Communication Science of UMY Haryadi Arief Nur Rasyid, S.IP, M.Sc. informed that the department has conducted Communication Awards since 2005. The awards are to appreciate Indonesian youths’ works.

Haryadi told that the Communication Awards is one of the oldest Indonesian competition in a communication area. “It has been 13 years that we honor creativity of communication science students,” he maintained.

As previous years, the Communication Awards 2018 brought a unique theme regarding a concern on issues in Indonesia. The theme of the Communication Awards 2018 was ‘Antarlina’ (what is adhered and vanished). Chairperson of the Communication Awards 2018 stated, “The soft opening focuses on local languages in Indonesia which are almost extinct. Through communication science students’ works, we would like to prevent the local language extinction.”

He added that the Communication Awards 2018 comprises of four contest categories, namely Print AD, PR-Nation, Integrated Campaign, and Film Gadget Festival (FFG). The competition is conducted on 1-2 December 2018 by inviting Indonesian communication figures as the judges. Meanwhile, the contest registration commenced from 17 September and 3 November 2018.

At the Communication Awards 2018, a talk show was organized under the theme of ‘Ana Gata’, Sansakerta language meaning ‘future’. “The future is on our hand. Thus, we have to prepare for our future when we graduate,” she expressed.

Besides, at the talk show, three alumni of the department were invited. They are successful in their workplace so that talk show participants, who are students of the department, were inspired and ready for their future. They were from different backgrounds, namely broadcasting, public relations, and advertising. Respectively, they were a reporter of Kompas TV, an owner of Healthy Beauty ID Nutrition Club Hanifah Razan, and a creative conceptor at Mara Advertising Guntur Novianto.
