Learning is not only mastering theories at class but also governing and practicing what is learnt in daily life. It needs to be implemented immediately after knowledge is learnt. Thus, students are expected to perceive the practice dealing with what they learn during their study.

It was the statement of a lecturer of Communication Sciences of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IKOM UMY), Erwan Sudiwijaya, S.Sos., MBA on his remark in the opening of exhibition of IKOM’s students so-called “Urban Market Youth 2015”. There were 54 food stands, 54 advertising stands, and 18 stands of copywriting and the scripts displayed in this exhibition. It was part of the fourth Competence Test of students of Communication Sciences who took courses of Entrepreneurship, Advertising, and Copywriting. It was held from Lobby of Faculty of Social and Political Science (Fisipol) UMY to Lobby of Faculty of Law (FH) UMY floor 1 and 2 on Saturday (17/01).

Erwan explained that this event aimed at evaluating courses of Entrepreneurship, Advertising, and Copywriting which students had previously prepared the concept when learning at class for one semester. Additionally, it is as the real practice for students to perceive their concept in daily life.

“In fact, the purpose is to apply the knowledge in reality. I notice and evaluate that Entrepreneurship course previously stopped in making proposal, and they did not believe that their concept would be a business. I am eager that their business concept could be implemented in daily life, so do Advertising and Copywriting course. The initial idea is to apply the knowledge during their study at class in the real world and they could do that in daily life,” he told.

Erwan added that the event was not the first time conducted by his partied. It had been carried out since two years ago, yet it was not as merry as it conducted today. The second year was only held at class as well.

“It has been the third year. The area was not as big as this. Competence Test (UK) in the first year was simple that a table is for together and the second year of UK got decrease so that it was conducted at class. For the third year, Alhamdulillah, it is beyond my expectation. The overview that I have told at class is not as big as this. There are many varieties indeed, and each product mostly uses an exhibition stand.”

Besides it is part of Competence Test, Erwan elucidated that his parties had long term dream of this event namely coining an exhibition as art market of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) which all creative works of students could be displayed in the event. Erwan hoped that this event could be a place for students and alumni of UMY to get on together. It also could be a forum to build networks between students and alumni.

“I wish that it would be like art market of ITB that all creative works of students would be shown there. This event could also be a forum for students and alumni of UMY to get on together. Therefore, all students of UMY could join in the event. Alumni from various cities have a reason to back to Jogja when Urban Market Youth. The impact is that the relationship between students and alumni would get close. It would create broad networks which could be valuable for students after they graduate such as getting job and others.”
