English Department Student Association (EDSA) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) successfully conducted the 6th National English Speech Competition (NESCO) for high school students. Bringing ‘Digital Literacy in Industrial Revolution 4.0 and How It Will Shape the Future of Education’ as the theme, the NESCO was organized on Saturday (6/4) at building of K.H. Ibrahim, floor 5, UMY.
The NESCO aimed to provide high school students an occasion to enhance their English speaking ability in public. It was also addressed to develop their critical thinking and broaden their knowledge.
Besides, the competition focusing on industrial revolution 4.0 was because nowadays the era brings significant impacts on this present life. Indeed, the disruptive era has occurred to all life aspects including education. The technology development may not hamper an educational area so that digital literacy plays an essential role.
“The theme of the NESCO is regarding digital literacy. We concern with how to design an educational system integrating internet and digital literacy in Indonesia. I personally wish that notions delivered by NESCO participants can contribute to Indonesia education development. Therefore, we all grasp that digital literacy is about not only online assessments, online materials but also particularly the significance of digital literacy for English Education,” declared Milad, Chief of NESCO 2019.
Additionally, the NESCO 2019 had 36 participants. It comprised of a preliminary and final round. At the preliminary round, participants were divided into three rooms and two best participants of each room passed to the final round. The winners were from SMK N 3 Kasihan, Homeschooling Primagama, and SMA Sidoarjo.
