It is a must that a man with more wealth helps the people in need around him. When a man with more wealth helps the people in need, the nature balance will be formed regularly.

Thus the idea of what Syakir Jamaluddin, MA, the Chairman of the Institution of Islamic Study and Practice (LPPI), when presenting in zakat training in stated in AR. Fahruddin B of UMY Integrated Campus on Saturday (6/30). The event held by LPPI was attended by UMY lecturers, officials, and several students.

Jamaluddin told that zakat was the obligation for everyone having more wealth to give to the people in need. This obligation should not be viewed as a force to the haves but as a natural thing in life. He added, “Law is an obligation aiming at building a society. Even though it looks reinforcing, basically it is an effort for the sake of the society. It can be imagined what will happen when the haves do not help the have-nots that force the later to steal from the former. It is not merely the fault of the thief but also haves who do not want to help others in need.”

Jamaluddin stated that there was no zakat obligation for wealth gained from crime. This means that zakat only applies to the wealth gained in a good way. He asserted, “A zakat will not be accepted if a person corrupts, or robs and give the zakat to clean his wealth. This type of zakat with this certain aim will never be accepted.”

Other than that, Jamaluddin explained further, the types of zakat among others are gold, silver, cattle, crops, minerals, artifacts, traded goods, etc. Jamaluddin added, “Meanwhile, the people deserving the zakat were fakir (very poor people), poor people, amil (zakat organizer), people in debt that is not due to immoral deeds, fisabilillah (people striving in the name of Allah), people in a long journey. These people receiving zakat are called mustahiq zakat.”

Another speaker, Muhsin Haryanto, gave training on how to calculate zakat using software. Haryanto, who was a member of Legal Affairs Committee of Muhammadiyah Central Executive, added, “If we can calculate our zakat, it is easier for us to know the amount of zakat we need to give and to know if we already have the zakat obligation by using the software. Thus, at least, we can avoid miscalculation.”
