‘Fusion to Innovation’ in the 36th Anniversary

Being 36 years old on March 1st, 2017, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) attempts to carry previous strategic plans to be a World Class University. In line with the goal, UMY’s anniversary commemoration brings ‘Going to Entrepreneurship-Based Islamic and Innovation World Class University’ as the theme and ‘Fusion to Innovation’ as the tagline.

In a phone interview on Tuesday (28/2), chief of the 36th anniversary commemoration committee drg. Laelia Dwi Anggraini, SpKGA explained, “Having the tagline, we would like to unite local and modern cultures to create innovation. Besides, regarding the theme, we would like to be a world class university,” drg. Lia stated.

The 36th anniversary commemoration comprises of five main events. First, UMY conducted ‘Malam Refleksi’ (Reflection Night) began with listening to Al-Qur’an recitation by hafidz (being able to memorize Al-Qur’an) students on Wednesday evening (28/2) at Sportorium of UMY. Second, UMY will organize ‘Laporan Tahunan Rektor’ (Rector’s Annual Report) and ‘Pidato Milad’ (Anniversary Remark) and will invite Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Retno Lestary Priansari Marsudi on April 21st. Third, there will be a seminar and exhibition.

Fourth, dealing with entrepreneurship, UMY will hold a seminar on April 5-6 at Sportorium with distinguished guest speakers, namely Sri  Mulyani Indrawati, Ph.D.,Prof. Wong Poh Kam., dr. Hasto Wardoyo, SpOG., and Chairul Tandjung. “The seminar and exhibition has a theme of ‘Innovation Strategy, Technology, and Social Entrepreneurship’. It aims at broadening participants’ knowledge of entrepreneurship development at higher education, and fostering innovation in various sectors. Indeed, the participants are academicians from various universities and invited guests, while the exhibition is open for public.

Fifth, to interweave good relationship among academicians, UMY will conduct family gathering and sport competitions on March 6 – April 9. In the family gathering, there will be a puppet drawing competition for children and traditional games such as coconut shell and ‘egrang’ (a traditional plaything 2 rods made of bamboo which has pedestal bottom). The events aim at acquainting them to local culture. The family gathering will also engage modern activities to create an innovation.” she mentioned.

Besides the main events, UMY will also carry out social services in several villages, Islamic speech, and cleft lip surgery. “On March 12, UMY will perform social services such as free medical checkup, primary food sharing, school equipment sharing, and Islamic speech in Sidoharjo, Samigaluh, and Kulon Progo. Along with the Islamic speech, the first milestone to establishment of a mosque in UMY’s staffs of Mentari Elok housing complex attended by officials of Muhammadiyah and UMY’s academicians will be held on March 19. Meanwhile, the cleft surgery is for underprivileged Muhammadiyah family and is conducted on April 15-16. The surgery is held by collaborating with RS PKU Muhammaidyah Gamping and Muhammadiyah Cleft Center,” she said.
