Recently, technology has advanced very quickly. Every discipline is determined to innovate and adapt to the ever-changing human needs. Researchers who are developing said technology needs to provide for and improve society as it stands. Because of that, innovation must be accompanied by social, environmental, and financial values. This is the main goal of the 3rd International Conference on Sustainable Innovation (ICoSI) Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.
Prof. Alberto Gomez of La Trobe University, Spain, stated that mankind is on the brink of a global disaster. 68% of the world’s forests are damaged, while 80% of the rivers cannot support life, because of climate change. He said that we need to return to the old ways, namely to implement values and morals to every new innovation.
“By rejuvenating what has already existed with new ideas, because we cannot innovate with a mind that also produces problems. So what we should do is use older methods to solve modern problems,” he said as a keynote speaker in the 3rd ICoSI on Tuesday (30/7) at UMY’s Sportorium.
He also stated that Asia has the potential to contribute to the future of mankind. Gomez clarified that environmental damage starts from humans, which is why it is important to emphasize the values of environmental care.
“Using the potential of Asia, namely to use the existing Asian values and incorporate them to modern-day thinking, modern problems can be solved. I used to think that the root of environmental problems lies in the destruction of the ecosystem. However, I found that it all starts with our greed and apathy. We must stop this by transforming our spiritual and cultural values,” he added.
At the same venue, the Director of Bank Indonesia Institutes’ of Economical and Monetary Policies, Dr. Reza Alingkusumo stated that innovation in technology can affect today’s economical development. Because of that, mankind’s general quality must be improved so that it can keep up with technological advances.
“Innovation that can increase economic productivity and create jobs is important. This means that innovation, development, and application of new ideas and technology that could support input and increase the output of products and services are a must. Innovation needs adequate technological support, especially in product technology. In turn, it also needs the human resources to grow alongside the technology,” he added.
He also clarified that innovation needs to have proper and continuous financial support. Lastly, innovation needs a functional financial market and a continuous financial system. “The core of innovation is initiative which include startups, micro, small, and middling businesses (UMKM) as well as larger corporations, which means that integrity from every business participant is needed to guarantee that the innovation can truly fit the need,” he stated.
At the same time, Rector of UMY Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P pointed out that innovation has to consider its continuation in the future. “Every form of development and progress will affect the natural balance. Which means that innovation needs to be able to increase efficiency and productivity with as little negative impact as possible to any aspect of life,” Gunawan stressed.
He also hopes that innovation can continue to provide a noticeable impact on technological development and human values for future generations.
