Instilling Positive Emotions for Students Based on Islamic Principles on Al-Qur’an

An emotional bond between teachers and students determines learning convenience effecting students’ potential enhancement. “Teachers should get accustomed to communicating positively and refining themselves from negative communication,” declared Miftah Ulya at her dissertation defense on Thursday (15/11) at Amphitheater of Kasman Singodimedjo Building of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY).

On her dissertation entitled ‘Basic Emotions on Al-Qur’an and Educational Psychology’, Miftah conveyed that teachers need to maintain their positive image to create good communication. For instance, they should focus on their speaking, invite instead of dictating, speak tenderly, and have natural gestures. “Rasulullah SAW advised to talk simply, not to make it complicated, make people happy, and not to let down,” mentioned Miftah.

She believed that managing emotions is a means to have positive interaction as Al-Qur’an teaching. “Emotions can affect students’ learning achievements, accelerate a learning process, and gain better learning results. On the other hand, negative emotions such as lying, fear, anger and others will slow, or even cease, a learning process,” maintained Miftah.

“Islamic education is a process of learning, construction, self-development, and potential enhancement based on Islamic values mentioned on Al-Qur’an. Thus, teachers will be able to coin positive communication with their students,” added Miftah.

“It is essential for teachers to recognize growth and development of students so that the harmonic relations are created. Besides, I wish that humanist education based on perspectives of Al-Qur’an can be built as Al-Qur’an principles,” she emphasized. Additionally, at the dissertation defense, Miftah passed with an excellent predicate.
