JKSG UMY and Yonsei University Agree to Conduct Research Collaboration

Jusuf Kalla School of Government (JKSG) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) with Yonsei University, Republic of Korea on research collaboration and academic development. The signing was conducted on Thursday (16/2) at meeting hall, floor 1, Graduate School of UMY.

In the LoA Signing, JKSG of UMY was represented by the Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., while Prof. Dr. Dong Keung Yoon from School of Urban and Environmental Engineering of Yonsei University spoke for Yonsei University.

Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Dong Keung Yoon acted as the speaker of a seminar on disaster management in the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Indonesia. He stated that government of the Republic of Korea has attempted to unify all rescue squads at a ministry.

“Disaster management in the Republic of Korea is the responsibility of Ministry of Public Safety and Security. The disaster agencies worked by themselves and focused on their own area such as flood, earthquakes, and other disasters, but now the ministry unites them to work hand in hand,” Prof. Dong told.

Prof. Dong also informed that the government possesses sophisticated technology of disaster prevention. “For instance, the Republic of Korea has water gate or water barrier which is a dam to prevent flood. This country also owns a high technology rescue robot utilized to save victims of Sewol Ship 2 last year. The robot is used in maritime disaster management,” he mentioned.

He inserted that the Republic of Korea also has debris barriers with structural steel and eco magic permeable block to prevent flood. “This country also puts early warning system and flash flood alerts system so that the people are well-prepared for confronting disasters,” Dong ended.
