Living environment is the commencement of development. However, public do not pay much attention to the living environment so that a lot of issues exist. Regional heads, institutions, and who will make constructions should concern with the living environment.
Acting as a speaker of the 32th Anniversary of Agricultural Faculty of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Directorate General of Forestry Planner and Environment Management, Prof. Dr. Ir. San Afri, M.Sc. stated that development concerning with living environment in Indonesia is necessary. The development should be in line with support and capacity so that the natural resources are maintained.
“A lot of areas easily create land without considering the support and capacity. This damages natural resources.
He advised that each development should be constructed wisely. “Social cost, damage cost, and natural resource decreasing cost can improve economy growth so that regionals heads could prepare to conduct mitigation and make wise decision,” he asserted.
Besides, he argued that agricultural development is confronting other issues. “In Indonesia, the agriculture relies on the climate change so that water might be rare,” he said.
The other agricultural issue is that areas for barns are used to develop infrastructures and cities. “For instance, Central Java can become a national barn and a center of infrastructure growth. The circumstance leads to the decreasing of environment quality and prone-disaster area,” he mentioned.
He also talked about peat lands in Indonesia. There are 15 million hectares of peat lands, but it has reduced 2.6 million hectares. He informed that the peat lands benefit to save land. “The peat lands can save two trillion liters of water. All lakes in Indonesia are counted 200 billion liters of waters. It is so sad that the water capacity in Indonesia is alleviating,” he ended.
