In order to anticipate excessively blooming hoax among millenials, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta participated in discussion held by Precinct Police of Sleman Regency on Tuesday (12/2). The discussion theme was “Menjadi Milenial Modern Cinta Lalu Lintas Yang Siap Perangi Hoax” (Becoming Modern Millennials Who Are Obedient to Traffic and Ready to Combat Hoax) and conducted in Brick Cafe, Nglalik, Sleman.
Muhammad Muttaqien, S.Ikom, M.Sn., a lecturer of UMY, participated as a guest to deliver dissucission about the importance of being wise in social media. He also said that students nowadays had urgency to do anti-hoax campaign, starting from simple and trivial things.
“Millenials are inseparable from internet. Most of you basically wake up in the morning, and directly grab your cellphones. However, it is also important for you to sort information that you consume,” declared Muttaqien in front of High School students in Sleman who attended the discussion.
A lecturer, well known as “Angki”, uttered that hoaxes are hazardous and can possibly cause many disadvantages because they can mislead people from valid information. Angki also revealed that internet is an effective machine to spread hoaxes. Over 92.40 percent of internet falsehoods came from social media, followed by chatting applications which contribute as big as 62.20 percent, then over 34.90 percent comes from websites, and 3.10 percent is from e-mail.
Angki also ugred students to actively stop hoax spread on the internet. One of the easiest ways to prevent hoax dissemination is reporting it to a website of Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), which can be accessed through aduankonten@mail.kominfo.go.id or turnbackhoax.id.
Meanwhile, Sleman Police Chief, AKBP Rizky Ferdiansyah, S.H., S.IK. encouraged students to be more polite in streets. He conveyed that students should be safety-ride pioneers. He also mentioned effective ways to combat hoaxes. “You need to leverage your sophisticated devices to justify whether or not information is valid,” he stated.
