Muhamadiyah Higher Education Institutions Should Possess the Center for Intellectual Property Rights

Copyright is an exclusive right for someone possessing works and the rights of the works. Thus, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) collaborating with Directorate General of Intellectual Property firstly conducted ‘Training of Intellectual Rights in Muhammadiyah Higher Education” on Tuesday-Wednesday (17-18/4) at KJ Hotel Yogyakarta. The training was attended by representatives of Muhammdiyah Higher Education institutions across Indonesia.

Director of Cooperation and Intellectual Property Empowerment Dr. Molan Karim Tarigan, S.H., M.H. believed that a nation should prioritize intellectual property to be developed country. “Intellectual property is essential in all fields, particularly a modern business area. People’s works will be guaranteed, be acknowledged, and get profits. Works legally protected will get stronger, public will recognize who has the copyrights, and no one can plagiarize the works. A work which has existed and been noticed by public should be shielded by government through Directorate General of Intellectual Property,” stated Dr. Molan.

Dr. Molan added that there are several areas which can have copyrights, namely music, arts, publishing and printing, computer services & software, radio, television, research development, fisheries, architecture, maritime, and trade. “Intellectual property can be a big brand and spread around the world. If someone possesses a work, it should be registered in the Directorate General of Intellectual Property to evade plagiarism. Hence, 176 Muhammadiyah Higher Education institutions in Indonesia should have a center for intellectual property rights to support government to patent the rights,” emphasized Dr. Molan.

Meanwhile, Rector of UMY Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P. declared that the center for intellectual property rights is vital to be established. It aims to enhance lecturers’ confidence in making works since they will be protected. “Lecturers’ roles has shifted that they not only teach but also conduct research or create works. Lecturers of Muhammadiyah institutions have to specific capabilities shielded by the Center for Intellectual Property Rights. In the 4th Revolution, educational institutions are not noticed by their construction but also their abilities to accommodate students through e-learning. Therefore, digital literacy is the main aspect in a learning and teaching process. I hope that all Muhammadiyah institution keep innovating and creating beneficial products for society,” he expected.
