Public speaking turns to individual need. It is employed to utter in appropriate language so that the message could be delivered and would not mislead. Public speaking is an essential element in governmental area. For one reason, there would be found many ways of communication to convey statements for either public interest or society. Hence, the ones who work in government are required to retain public speaking.
The aforementioned paragraph was the statement of Novita Pratika Ismayanti, Branch Manager (Owner) of Purwacaraka Music Studio, Branch of Yogyakarta-Solo, in a workshop of Public Speaking conducted by Governmental Studies of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) on Tuesday (23/12) in Mini Theater of Language Training Center (PPB) of UMY. Besides Novita, it was attended by Istining Dwi Indriati, a broadcaster former of RRI Pro2 FM Jakarta, who was also the speaker of the training.
According to Novita, public speaking in governmental field was utilized to deliver messages dealing with society, so that it was compulsory for the ones working in governmental area to master public speaking. It would also be valuable when they convey messages or give information to all society.
Moreover, Novita continued that working in the government should govern the appropriate diction to utter the statement in order that the message could be delivered. “We need to recognize the society we talk to, what their job is, what their education is. Hence, we could find out what language we would use for our statement. If we have already understood, the message of our utterance would automatically be delivered,” stated Novita who was also the broadcaster former of Trijaya FM.
On the other hand, Istining Dwi Indriati argued that, besides mastering the diction, the ones working in governmental area need notice the language use. The language they used should be understandable and not be rambling. Additionally, when delivering a speech, it was necessary to insert humorous sentences. It would be beneficial to dilute the atmosphere in order that it was not rigid and tightening. “We also have to comprehend proper gesture. Thus, you may attempt to frequently interact to the audience, manage your time, and hold the audience,” told the broadcaster former of Trijaya FM.
Isti, a broadcaster former of Bahana FM as well, gave an instance on how the one in governmental field should communicate and interact to the society (audience). “Taking audience attention, we need to do some approaches. For instance, when a governor talks to a farmer, he needs to begin the conversation regarding farmers’ area such as asking how he is or how his occupation is, whether or not it runs well. Therefore, the atmosphere would be diluted and the former would not get bored. When talking to the farmers, you might use simple language, so that you might use a close-to-people language,” explained Isti.
