Noticing the significance of leadership, Jusuf Kalla School of Government (JKSG) conducted a public lecture by Regent of Berau on Friday (20/10) at Building of Kasman Singodimedjo of Universitas Muhammmadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY).
To begin with, Regent of Berau Muharram shared how he could achieve his success. “If you want to be a successful person, you have to do two things. You should get out of your daily routines and comfort zone,” he declared.
In the public lecture, Muharram mainly discussed leadership. Leadership teaches people to be more responsible in all aspects. A leader should work professionally and loyally. “It is tolerable if a leader does not work professionally, but she/he is not loyal, it is unacceptable,” he stated.
Muharram analogized that managing a county resembles a household. “As a parent, a leader is responsible for protecting family members, ensuring that children have decent and prosperous life, and making them happy as well as peaceful.
“We have to keep in mind that a leader is not about earning a living but she/he should care of all of the people. A leader should be smart and solutive, and may not be vainglorious. Most of new leaders feel that they are the boss,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, a lecturer of Governmental Studies Sakir, S.IP., M.IP. agreed with Regent of Bureau that leadership should go hand in hand with love and togetherness. “A leader should love subordinates even though they do not vote her/him in general elections since it is essential to achieve visions and missions. Indeed, managing government entails synergy of all parties and the togetherness can grow comfort of the subordinates,” he maintained.
He also advised students of Governmental Studies to be a visionary, commitment, and consistent leader. “When being a leader, you have to commit to humanizing human beings as being equitable, providing accessible services, and embodying regional autonomy. Indeed, a leader should create literacy movement,” ended Sakir.
