Students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) associated in Taekwondo club achieved 18 medals in End Year Master Kaekwondo Poomsae Championship 2016 across Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) conducted by Indonesia Taekwondo Regional Organizer of DIY on Wednesday (28/12).
Chief of Taekwondo, Asep Maulana, told that who joined the competition were public and guest participants from several regions such as Batam, West Java, and others, counted 450 participants. He also informed that the competition was held from 7 a.m. to afternoon at Sport Center (GOR) of KONI of DIY located in Panguan, Triadi, Sleman.
“The participants were also from other universities such as UGM, UNY, UAD, Instiper, UNISA, and others,” Asep mentioned in an interview on Thursday (29/12) at Public Relations and Protocol of UMY.
Asep, who is an Islamic faculty student of batch 2014, told that his club had been prepared for the competition for two months. “We created a training center to train the club members. They exercised twice a week, and the members who would join the competition had three more days to have exercise. The exercise was usually undertaken in the evening and matched the members’ schedule,” Asep stated.
Asep also mentioned 18 medals, namely six gold medals, four silver medals, and 8 bronze medals. In spite of obtaining a number of medals, UMY was not the grand champion of the competition. The grand champion was rewarded to Instiper Yogyakarta.
Nevertheless, Asep was optimistic that Taekwondo club of UMY will gain other achievements. “I wish that this club can win both national and international competition so that this club can contribute to UMY,” he envisaged.
