Technology Advances Should Never Eliminate Humanity Values

Technology advances enable people to develop the Artificial Intelligence (AI). The AI, in fact, can be useful for daily needs, including college activities. This innovation can ease lecturers in classes due to effective time management. The lecturers can also spare their time to conduct research or community services. The AI seems to be a useful breakthrough for lecturers, but not for the country and communities that still hold high social values. Those lines were dlivered by Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P. in an interview session with Public Relations and Protocol Office of UMY on Monday (27/5).

Gunawan explained that AI was discussed on the 2019 conference held by Association Universities of Asia Pacific. He informed, “The conference was held from 23 to 25 May through a scientific meeting for 48 universities in Asia and Pacific. The meeting raised a theme about preparation for higher education to utilize the AI in the teaching and learning processes. UMY was a board member of the association and was given a reliance to command a speaker form Hong Kong. The speaker UMY assisted was delivering a material related to a process of robot installation in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic) learning.

The industrial revolution causes many countries using AI mechanisms as a part of their learning processes. “Especially in engineering and health. The AI is helpful to support practical processes, formulations of final assignments, and other planning. This enables lecturers to spare their time for research. Besides, lecturers do not have to come to classes because AI can be an assistant taking over the teaching and learning processes,” maintained Gunawan.

Moreover, Gunawan also mentioned that UMY can be an inspiration to use the AI in the reaching and learning process. However, the utilization of AI does not entirely replace lecturers in classes. “Because we understand that the learning process is not always about transfer of knowledge, but also transfer of value and character building. These two other processes cannot be achieved through robot assistants. This model of teaching also happens in highly social-constructed countries such as Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam,” asserted Gunawan.

“Our discussion finally examines humane technology that does not replace, eliminate, and marginalize humanity values. As for UMY, technology advances should become a mediator to build characters and inherit noble values,” ended Gunawan.
