According to Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemristekdikti), the number of start-up practitioners in Indonesia surpasses a thousand of people. This number marks Indonesia as the highest country possessing start-up practitioners in ASEAN and the fifth highest country in the world. However, this number is still far behind compared to the number of other developed countries.
To boost the business, Students Entrepreneurship and Business Incubator (SEBI) of Univeristas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) collaborated with Tebar Bisa Foundation (TBF), Perhumas Muda Yogyakarta, Forum Digital Marketing (Fordigma), and Login Indonesia conducting a design thinking workshop entitled Technopreneur Talk #2, Design Thinking: Strategy to Develop Your Idea on Monday (29/4) at Amphitheater of Siti Walidah Building of UMY.
Head of Office of Student and Alumni Development (LPKA) of UMY, Faris Al-Fadhat, Ph.D. declared that Indonesia government targets to boost the industrial business growth. “Besides, this can be a means to optimize several potentials, namely large markets and capable human resources that can contribute innovations and open up jobs for people,” uttered Faris.
Faris also mentioned that becoming a business practitioner in this era brings a new advantage. “This is because the industries do not role only as an economic activity, but also as a solution and an innovation in solving problems in society. The workshop provides assistance for people to obtain certain skills. Later, the skills can be useful to transform ideas into products,” stated Faris. Moreover, Faris uttered that the workshop routinely invites speakers to facilitate students who are interested in becoming business practitioners.
The other speaker, Sebastian Alexander Dharmawangsa from Innovative Academy of Universitas Gadjah Mada conveyed that a business is firstly commenced by an idea. “Statistically, there are 98 percent of failed products in markets. The failed products happen because markets do not properly welcome them,” maintained Alexander.
Sebastian who is also a manager of 1000 Start-up UGM informed that people should considerably decide ideas for businesses. “To generate a prosperous idea, one must conduct the design thinking. The design thinking is a brainstorming system that ensures all parties involved to generate ideas,” added Sebastian. He detailed, “First, you must comprehend the problems you want to solve. Second, you should construct ideas in your head and decide what solutions you can offer. Last, you can start creating products validations.”
Additionally, Sebsatian also mentioned that the design thinking is an optional system to construct ideas. This system guarantees what markets desire for ideas. “Constructed ideas should be validated so that markets can accept them. Through validations, we can can also evade processing products based on personal assumptions. The system is useful to strengthen your team because basically you perform the ideas together,” ended Sebastian.
