The Center for ASEAN Studies of UMY Discusses Transnational Crime Eradiation in Southeast Asia

The Center for ASEAN Studies of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) organized an ASEAN dialog on transnational crime eradiation in Southeast Asia. Conducted at Amphitheater E6 of K.H. Ibrahim Building of UMY on Thursday (8/11), the dialog was attended by 200 students from a number of UMY faculties such as Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and Faculty of Medicine and Health Science.

Besides, the speakers were a technical staff of the Indonesian Police in Tawao, Malaysia Naafi’ Arman S.T., M.H. and Division Head of the Center for ASEAN Studies of UMY as well as a lecturer at Faculty of Law of UMY Yordan Gunawan, S.H., MBA, M.H.

Naafi’ stated that ASEAN confronts transnational crime. “ASEAN as a regional forum possesses mechanisms to eradicate the crime such as ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) and the Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC), and ASEANAPOL as a police union of ASEAN member countries,” mentioned Naafi’.

Meanwhile, Yordan declared that ASEAN needs to commit to protect human rights in ASEAN regions by establishing ASEAN Court on Human Rights. The urgency of the establishment is now discussed by human right experts in ASEAN.

Additionally, the Center for ASEAN Studies of UMY was just founded, but it has carried out productive programs. “I hope that this center can always run the programs,” expected Head of Office of Research, Publication, and Community Service of UMY Dr. Ir. Gatot Supangkat M.P.

Head of the Center for ASEAN Studies of UMY Ali Muhammad, Ph.D. also delivered a remark. He told that the dialog was a program of the Center for ASEAN Studies of UMY. “The dialog is in accordance with visions and missions of the Center for ASEAN Studies of UMY to hold seminars, publications, and research,” conveyed Ali.
