As many as 31 Student Activity Units (UKM) and Student Institutions from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta underwent inauguration and handover of positions for the 2020/2021 period in the Amphitheater Room, 5th Floor of the AR Fachruddin B Building, UMY Central Campus on Thursday (5/11). This event was also broadcast live through the UMYogya Youtube channel.
Messages and hopes were conveyed by the Vice-rector for Alumni, Students Affairs and AIK, Prof. Hilman Latief, Ph.D, for those who will serve as chairman, vice chairman, and administrators of UKM and UMY Student Institutions. “I hope that you certainly have a more strategic role in developing UKM, especially in the pandemic situation. I am happy with the awarding from the campus for UKM and Student Institutions who have contributed well to the progress of UMY,” he said.
In the future, Hilman wants students who participate and are active in UKMs and Student Institutions to continue to compete at the national and international levels. So, there is a need for a frame to accommodate UKMs and Student Institutions so that they are able to face the Sustainable Development Goals, which is a global action plan agreed upon by world leaders, including Indonesia, to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect the environment. The SDGs contain 17 Goals and 169 Targets that are expected to be achieved by 2030.
“I want a frame for UKMs to follow the latest issues related to international formulas, namely Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are health, environmental, economic, social and other fields. You can be active in UKM, but you must have a good educational background. There are specific programs that can be included in the SDGs, so we will frame it so that at least of the 17 SDGs goals, we can achieve together one or two of them,” continued Hilman.
Meanwhile, the UMY Student and Alumni Development Institute as the institution that houses UKM and Student Institutions noted that there are 800 new administrators who will serve a term of office for the 2020/2021 period. However, only half of them are in Yogyakarta and they have a duty to promote and develop UKM and UMY Student Institutions.
At this event, UMY through LPKA also gave awards for four categories to UKM and Student Institutions which, during the 2019/2020 period, had successfully made achievements. The award winners include; BEM KM UMY which won recognition in the field of recognition, Student Resident achieved achievements in administration, the Scout UKM won the best achievement in the field of service, and Taekwondo UKM got the best achievement in the field of independent achievement.
