A Medical Help Team of Asy-syifa Life Emergency Rescue Team (TBM ALERT) of Medical and Health Science Faculty (FKIK) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) conducted a free eye surgery for public in Eyes Center, Asri Medical Center (AMC) on Sunday morning (30/10). The event was event series of celebrating the 17th anniversary of TBM ALERT which was on September 9 and the World Sight Day on October 12.
Chief of the event, Elga Rahadian, stated that the event was one of the contributions of the TBM ALERT in humanity. “This is in line with the belief of this organization, ‘never ending brotherhood’ and the vision to actively contribute to the society,” he told.
He informed that the free eye surgery was the following event of a free eye checkup on October 18-19 at UMY. “The checkup was for UMY’s academicians, while this eye surgery was for public,” he said.
Even though it was free, people might not wonder the quality. Elga emphasized that the surgery was undertaken by eye doctors supported by good facilities at Eye Center AMC. “There are four doctors that three doctors are from UMY, and the other is from AMC,” he mentioned.
Furthermore, seven people had the surgery that six people suffered cataract and the other got pterygium (a non-cancerous growth starting in the clear, thin tissues/conjunctiva of the eye).
Eni, a pterigium sufferer, told it was painful, and it distracted her vision. “Alhamdulillah, it has been gone. The surgery was only about 15 minutes. The bandage may not be opened for five days, and I have to keep it save from water,” she told.
She was thankful that the free surgery was held. She wished that the other free medical treatments could be organized. “Thank you, TBM ALERT. The free eye surgery was helpful,” she expressed.
