As Student Activity Unit (UKM) of Press and Publishing in the university, it is necessary to enhance the knowledge of media in the process of producing information which could be regaled by the society. Besides, it was a compulsory as a UKM to be responsible for the morals toward the development of students’ soft skills in the university generally, based on the focus of the UKM. Thus, it needs sensitivity of students who are willing to foster their ability of journalism to go immediately and see how a media company in producing information to public.
It was stated by the chief of the committee, Cadika Bonanda Fitriani. It was the fundamental of UKM of student Press and Publishing Institute, Nuansa UMY (UKM Nuansa UMY) to create a program to develop soft skills and knowledge of production media for students, so-called Job Training of Media (KKL Media).
The capital city, Jakarta, was the destination of KKL Media 2014 of UKM Nuansa UMY from Monday, the 7th to the 20th of November 2014. The program of KKL Media 2014 was followed by students from any faculties and academic year. The agenda sequence of KKL Media 2014 was visiting some media like Republika Online, Kompas Daily, NET. TV, SCTV, and Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).
Cadika argued that UKM Nuansa had conducted KKL Media 2013 in the same city. KKL Media 2014 raised the theme of “Observing Press Association behind Served Media” since most of the activities were visiting and immediately observing how editorial media works and publishes, from collecting data or pervasion to sending the news in the society.
“In fact, this is the second time that UKM Nuansa held this activity which it was in Jakarta as well but the theme and destinations were different. The theme of this year is “Observing Press Association behind Served Media”. We raise this theme because most of the activities are visiting and immediately observing how editorial media works and publishes, from collecting data or pervasion to sending the news in the society,” she told.
Additionally, one of the participants, Wahyu Nanda, commented, after looking at various press associations in Jakarta, that the challenges in media industry today was very hard which there were barriers undermining journalistic idealism in democratic era. Politic and economic factor were foremost in influencing media to date even though press freedom keep being echoed.
“The challenge in media industry today is not easy. There are many disturbances and barriers undermining journalistic idealism particularly in democratic era faced by Indonesia. Politic and economic factor dominantly influence media to date though freedom of press is shouted. It is mentioned on the story of Mr. Raymond Kaya, the head of SCTV when sharing his knowledge during discussion,” he said.
The committee expected that KKL media in this year would be the beginning preparation for students who were interested in journalism. As aforementioned statement, the challenges for workers of media in the future could not be considered easy that idealism was at stake.
“This activity would hopefully begin students’ preparation to be journalists if they are interested in it. Let consider that this is the beginning to observe press associations, which are familiar to us, look like. This is a rare occasion to visit famous press associations,” explained Mega Oktarina.
