Implementation of sustainable technology in bolstering long-term ecological balance has become everyone’s responsibility to create better future environment. The notion has been one of the foci of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) since 2011. To expand cooperation with other institutions having a similar concern and to enhance understanding of sustainable technology, UMY participated in UI Green Metric World University Ranking. At the event conducted on 19 December, UMY ranked 11th as the most sustainable university in a national level.
The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is a world university ranking for green and sustainable campus. 719 universities from 81 countries, which 66 of them were Indonesian universities, participated in the competition.
Secretary of Department of Electrical Engineering of UMY as well as UMY team coordinator Faaris Mujaahid, B.Eng., M.Sc. informed scoring criteria. “There were six categories, namely Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Management, Transportation, and Education & Research. Based on the six aspects, UMY achieved 5650 points, but we were aware that improvements are necessary,” stated Faaris.
“For instance, for water management, UMY has applied a number of programs to save and recycle water. However, the technology is only implemented in several spots at UMY as Admission Building. Besides, we need to improve a transportation category since it relates to emissions. We need to ameliorate a condition that many people use their private vehicle and only few public transportations are available to go to campus. Thus, we would like to conduct a program to cycle for UMY members,” explained Faaris.
Additionally, the event was a medium to broaden network of UMY in sustainable technology issues. “The forum was a means of collaboration for higher education institutions possessing strengths in aspects which we need to foster. One of them is through various workshops on the six categories so that all participants can utilize appropriate technology for their institution,” he expressed. Faris also expected that the event enabled a program of UMY to be Green Campus to be organized comprehensively.
