A proud title was once again achieved by Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), when it successfully listed its name in the 200 best campuses in Asia in 2020. This was revealed by the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dikti) Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud). This ranking was obtained based on data announced by a university rating agency, UniRank, previously 4 International Colleges and Universities (4ICU). UniRank is an international higher education directory as well as a search engine that features reviews and ratings of more than 13,600 officially recognized universities in 200 countries. UniRank’s release data titled “Top 200 Universities in Asia” included 18 Indonesian universities and one of them was the best private campus in Yogyakarta, UMY.
UniRank stated the ranking was to provide a global picture based on visits and the popularity of the college website in terms of estimated traffic, trust or authority and quality of popular links.
UMY Rector, Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P, IPM stated that one of the indicators that made UMY able to enter the Top 200 Universities in Asia list was the online lecture system that had been implemented by UMY a few years ago. The online lecture system also encourages students to visit the UMY website. “This is one of the reasons why UMY is one of of Asia’s best campuses according to UniRank,” said Gunawan when met by the UMY Public Relations Team on Tuesday (6/16).
Inspired by the education system in the United States, the development of the world of education is currently using a system that is so advanced that it allows learners to be able to study anywhere without being limited by time and place. The campuses that are most ready to face the times, especially in unexpected situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic that is being experienced by almost all the world’s population, are those who have properly used technology to its maximum potential, something UMY has been trying to achieve.
“The pandemic forces us to accept things that certainly does not sit well with us at all. However, there is wisdom that can be drawn from this incident. We become more able to think creatively and still be able to run campus programs even in very limited conditions. Thank God, good news keeps coming, like the latest news today that stated the increasing rank of UMY which is coupled with the top campuses in Asia. Hopefully, this can continue to be consistent and can inspire other campuses,” concluded Gunawan.
The 18 Indonesian Colleges that entered the top 200 Asian Universities include Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Universitas Lampung, Universitas Airlangga, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Universitas Negeri Semarang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Negeri Malang, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Universitas Bina Nusantara, Universitas Telkom, and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November.
