Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS)) was back to visit Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY).The visit was conducted on Tuesday, February 6 to have field trip and discussion in understanding more about progress of student activities and alumni management.
Hilman Latief, PhD as Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and AIK (Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan) UMY revealed that currently UMY continues to support maximally student activities. “So far, we continue to consistently provide coaching both morally and materially to students who are active in organizational activities and competitions on a national and international scale. For example, student organizations under the authority of Muhammadiyah namely Muhammadiyah Students Association (IMM) which has a special role in giving various Islamic values in Muhammadiyah Universities (PTM). Technically in our campus, the role of IMM remains in line with the spirit of Muhammadiyah which orients to compete on the good deeds, but this should still be on the supervision and control from every coach, “said Hilman.
Himan added that any student activity has become the responsibility of university. By many student activities, it can be one of learning processes and values of students’ maturity. “Fostering students’ performance is very dynamic and formally still have to stay in harmony with vision and mission of university. An organization or Student Activity (UKM) is a means for leadership process of students to be more active and have experiences outside class, “Hilman told.
The same ideas was delivered by Sugito, SIP., M.Si as Head of Student and Alumni Development Agency (LPKA) of UMY that academically student activities such as research and awards to alumni are the responsibility of UMY employees. “One way to explore the potential of students is involving them in Student Creativity Program UMY since such competition is an event to show students creative ideas both in the field of community service, copyright work and entrepreneurship. We conduct training directly from leader of university, after which we create a team to conduct regular coaching so that students can be more ready in the submission of proposals and the implementation of research, “he explained.
Alumni activities also become the main focus of UMY providing that caring about alumni is one way to keep good relationship continuously as well. “There are several programs conducted by the alumni such as providing scholarships to students which can’t afford their school. In addition alumni also play an active role in distributing students to the appropriate work field which is linear or related to their study programs,” Sugito conveyed.
On the other hand, Mahasi Sobariah as the representative of Vice Rector for Student Affairs of (UMS) said that his visit to UMY is to strengthen students and alumni activities in UMS. “UMY is relatively young and private, but it has been able to compete with the longer campus so that it is our reason to visit UMY,” Mahasi concluded.
