A debate team of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) will represent Private University Coordinating Body (Kopertis) V in National University Debating Championship (NUDC) 2017 conducted on 3-8 September 2017 in Surakarta.
The debate team was three International Relations students associated in Student English Activity (SEA) of UMY. They were Rafyoga Jehan Pratama, Nauval Andi Hakim, and Nuningtyas Sekar Aryani. The team became the 2nd runner up of NUDC 2017 of Kopertis V, while the winner was University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the 1st runner up as Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), and the 3rd runner up was Universitas Atmajaya Yogyakarta (UAJY).
“Before participating a national level of the NUDC, the participants should join a Kopertis level of NUDC. In Yogyakarta or Kopertis V, 44 teams from various university competed in the regional NUDC. Afterwards, 8 teams were selected as delegates of Kopertis V in the national level of NUDC,” told Rafyoga.
The NUDC of Kopertis V was organized on Monday to Wednesday (22-24/5) at Griya Persada Hotel, Kaliurang. Each team comprised of two debaters and an adjudicator. “The debate employs British Parliamentary system that four teams, two members of each, have a debate in a chamber. Whilst, the adjudicator’s capability of judging a debate competition will be assessed through a written and practice test,” explained Rafyoga.
Besides, Rafyoga was selected as top 10 best speakers. He was in the seventh rank of 88 debaters, and Nuningtyas was the sixth breaking adjudicator rank of 44 adjudicators.
“We are now preparing for the national NUDC. We will intensively have exercises and joint training with other universities of Kopertis V passing to the national level. We expected that our team can go to the international level. The winner of NUDC will represent Indonesia to join World University Debating Championship (WUDC) 2017 in Mexico,” stated Rafyoga.
