The Bureau of Research, Publication, and Social Service of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (LP3M UMY) received guests from the Research, Technology, Publication, and Cooperation Directorate of Universitas Mercu Buana, Jakarta. This visit is a part of Universitas Mercu Buana Jakarta’s official tour which aims to understand the management processes of LP3M in aspects such as internal journal management and forms of institutional development performed by several private universities in Yogyakarta, UMY being one of them.
For the visit, Universitas Mercu Buana Jakarta sent Dr. Devi Fitrianah, S.Kom., MTI as the Director of Research and Technology, as well as the Head of their P4 Division: Faruda Elmi., M.M. They intended to discuss journal publication within the SCOPUS index and how to manage accredited journal publication with Dianita Sugiyo., S.Kep., Ns., MHID. (Publication and Journal Division of LP3M UMY) and Budi Nugroho S.IP (Publication Division of LP3M UMY). As a part of their tour of Yogyakarta, they will also visit Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) and Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta.
This visit is a benchmarking attempt from Universitas Mercu Buana who wants to share and understand journal management in Universitas Muhammadiah Yogyakarta. “This afternoon’s discussion is regarding how UMY manages their journals to the accredited national level, with some even reaching international accreditation. For the future, Mercu Buana intends to participate in any journal development in UMY the help manage their own accredited journals, both national and international,” Stated Dianita Sugiyo when interviewed in UMY’s LP3M Office on the second floor of the K.H. Mas Mansyur building on Monday (5/3).
According to Dianita, there are several differences between Mercu Buana and UMY’s journal management. “In terms of publication, I feel like Mercu Buana has a great starting point. For instance, they stopped giving incentives to SCOPUS indexed journals that are known predators. Predatory academic journals are journals that did not go through the appropriate review processes, instead going through unorthodox methods such as demanding a fee for any journal to be published, which results in a shallow review process that is not substantial. This is something that we can implement in UMY.
With this visit, hopefully both UMY and Mercu Buana Jakarta can gather a lot of new information regarding journal management. “Hopefully, we can give helpful information regarding the management of journal and publication. We have agreed for Universitas Mercu Buana Jakarta to send some of their journal management staff to UMY in the near future,” Dian added. (Hbb)
