Urban Market Youth 2017: A Solution to Social Issues

Various issues occurring in a community can be worse if they are not overcome. Students should contribute to create resolutions to the problems as their service to the community. Noticing the fact, Department of Communication Sciences of Universitas MuhammadiyahtYogyakarta (UMY) conducted Urban Market Youth 2017 on Friday (22/12) at Sportorium of UMY.

The fifth Urban Market Youth was a final assessment of a course of Entrepreneurship of Department of Communication Sciences of UMY. In the event, students from two different batches sold various products discussed at class.

A lecturer of the course of Entrepreneurship for batch 2016 Ayu Amalia, S.Sos., M.A. stated, “The course aimed to enable students to enhance their capability in creating their own employment. Besides, their products are solutions for a number of social problems.”

Meanwhile, a lecturer of the course of Entrepreneurship for batch 2017 Erwan Sudiwijaya, S.Sos., MBA declared that students’ products are innovations of in solving issues in Indonesia. “What we have taught at class is dealing with a concept of socio-entrepreneurship that their products are solutions of social problems. For instance, one of the booths decides to sell lumpia (Javanese food) because students expect that most of Semarang people, who have overlooked culture of Semarang and their identity as Semarang people, will begin to reinforce their identity and culture through eating lumpia,” told Erwan.

“There is also a booth selling office equipment made from plastic bottles. Students are aware that plastic bottles can be a mosquito larvae breeding container and later will cause dengue fever. Recycling the plastic bottles is expected to reduce risks of the dengue fever. Thus, what we offer is actually is not products but solutions of various problems found by the students,” emphasized Erwan.
