Warung Prancis of UMY Invites Students to Have Plastic Use Diet

Climate change is a global issue discussed in Indonesia and in the world as the impacts of human activities shifting rapidly due to the scientific and technology development. One of the impacts is the use of plastic bags excessively. The plastics will produce greenhouse gas in garbage dump influencing extreme climate change in this earth. It will harass the forest and other ecosystems. Noticing the fact, Warung Prancis of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) collaborating with Institute Francais Indonesia (IFI) Jogja conducted ‘Pesta Sains 2015’ on 21-25 Septemper 20015.

Director of Warung Prancis of UMY Puthut Ardianto, S.Pd., M.Pd. conveyed that the schedule of Pesta Sains 2015 encompassed exhibition of climate change, seminar, and movie screening. The event aimed at raising community awareness, particularly students’ awareness, of climate change issues. “Coping with the climate change, which one of the causes is the use of plastics excessively, people, especially students, are supposed to be aware of diminishing the use of plastics. One of the ways is through plastic diet when shopping,” he argued. Plastic diet ought to be taught earlier since the use of plastics in this world, particularly in Indonesia, is elevating day by day.

Furthermore, Director of IFI Jogja Madame Kristin asserted that the world temperature is getting hotter, but a lot of people is not aware yet of the impacts. Indonesia, France, and other countries is now confronting instable climate change. “The unpredictable climate change bring bad impacts to each country in the world so that similar events should be organizes to educate community, particularly students, who have not been concerned about the world condition,” she affirmed.

Additionally, a seminar was conducted on Tuesday (22/9) at Mini Theater, Building D, Floor 4, UMY. It had a theme of ‘Scientific Seminar of Renewable Energy and Climate Change. Acting as the speaker was President Director of Energi Bersih Indonesia (ENEBI) Dinar Arif Prasetyo. Seeing the unpredictable climate nowadays, renewable energy is necessary as the solution of the climate change. “Renewable energy is a link between government and companies having huge capital to manage the renewable energy to overcome the climate change impacts. Renewable energy sources can utilize wind and solar energy,” he elucidated.

He inserted that it is necessary to socialize renewable energy to the community because Indonesia people’ knowledge of the use of renewable energy is not adequate. “Involvement of academicians is also necessary to manage the renewable energy and then socialize it to the community,” he ended.
