The Directorate General of Higher Education (Ditjen Dikti) of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia announced the clustering of Indonesian universities in 2020 on Monday (17/7). Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta remains in Cluster II, with output and outcome values being above average.
“In the national ranking, UMY remains in the 35th position, the number of universities in Cluster II has decreased, from 70 to 34. Meanwhile, in Cluster I there are 15 universities. UMY has scored above average on Output and Outcome, “said the Vice-Rector for Cooperation and International Affairs Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc.
Clusterization is a move by the Directorate General of Higher Education to map the performance of Indonesian academic tertiary institutions under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The performance of higher education institutions in Indonesia is identified based on four main aspects, namely the quality of human and student resources (Input), higher education management (Process), short-term performance achievements achieved by universities (Output), and long-term performance achievements of higher education institutions (Outcome).
In the Output indicator, there are four things that are included in the assessment including the number of indexed scientific articles per lecturer, research performance, student performance, and the number of study programs that are internationally accredited or certified. Meanwhile, in the Outcome indicator, there are five assessments, namely innovation performance, what percentage of graduates get a job within 6 months, the number of citations per lecturer, the number of patents per lecturer, and the performance of community service.
According to the official letter from the Ministry of Education and Culture, from the results of the data gathered from 2,136 available universities, the results of the 2020 higher education cluster consisted of 5 (five) higher education clusters with the composition of cluster 1 totaling 15 universities, cluster 2 totaling 34 universities, cluster 3 totaling 97 universities, cluster 4 totaling 400 universities, and cluster 5 totaling 1,590 universities.
Director General of Higher Education Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC, Ph.D stated that there was no dichotomy between Private or Public institutions in this clustering. “There is no difference between public and private universities in terms of assessment. The key remains in leadership and synergy. As long as the rector of said universities can build synergy, it can drive the university to realize its vision and mission in bringing the entire academic community to improve its quality, “said Nizam.
With UMY not decreasing in rank, it gives hope that the university will continue to improve its quality. “We want to maintain our research performance because the indicators in Outcome and Output are good. Then, we want to pursue input indicators by increasing the number of doctoral lecturers, and so on. We want to continue to increase it. As said by Mr. Nizam who wants to encourage universities to internationalization programs, we will concentrate on these programs, “concluded Tony K. Furthermore, UMY is still in the first position among Muhammadiyah Higher Education institutions, the 7th best National Private Higher Education, and is ranked 5th as a university under the age of 50. (Hbb)
